Google, we need Docs on our tablet!
A couple of weeks ago my girlfriend bought the ASUS EeePad Transformer, which is a great little piece of tech, for a great price. But that aside, it turns out that it is not yet the laptop replacement that I imagined. This is largely due to the fact that is no easy task to sync documents between the slate and a desktop. Dropbox doesn’t work as well as on a desktop, mainly having troubles with re-synching and re-saving documents. Google Docs in the Honeycomb browser is not up to par with a document app like Polaris. However, the Google Docs synching option in Polaris Office is also not dependable enough to not feel afraid about losing work and the Google Docs app itself wasn’t even optimized for Honeycomb, up until yesterday.
However, the tablet optimized version of Docs is little more than a cosmetic optimization, basically only offering a better overview of your document list. When you open a document, you still get sent to a mobile webpage which shows the document in the same way as you can view it on your mobile phone. This is stupid; people want to work on documents on their tablet, because that will make them forget about their clunky PC’s. And I think that a good document suite is essential to present your tablet as a useful device which you can do some work on.
So Google, put your back into it and optimize ALL of Docs for the tablet. Best would be to copy the desktop web interface to the tablet app, so we can have all of Docs functionality right at our fingertips while in the train or at school in a boring lecture. Thanks in advance.
