I knew this day would come some day, and it’s a sad one. My HTC Desire is now just over 6 months old and up until now, it still fought up there with the best for a spot in the Android phone top 3. However, since the announcement of an updated Google Maps app, I must admit defeat. Because of the insufficient screen-hardware, my Desire will not be getting the full update with cool multi touch functionality, because it can’t multi touch all that well….

The HTC Desire’s screen has only pinch-to-zoom multi touch functionality and cannot register more than 2 fingers at the same time. Even then, those 2 fingers should not cross each others axes when moving over the screen, because this will register incorrectly. This basically rules out 2 finger panning or 2 finger rotating, which are exactly the gestures that the new Maps app can register to manipulate the map view to show 3D buildings or rotate the map view.

I guess I could have seen this coming because it is a well known flaw of the Nexus One and the Desire and was known since their release, it was just never a flaw which got in the way of the newest functionality available to phones. Until know. I have to face it, my Desire will soon belong to the phones from the olden days, I guess I have to start saving for a Nexus S, or some other new hip phone to come along early next year. Please Santa, hear my prayers….
